With episode 4 in post-production, we have been interviewing some of the cast members from series 2 to discuss the show.
Today we talk to Tam Toye, who has starred in numerous TV shows and films throughout his career as well as fronting 80’s rock band, Knightriders. Tam plays Mr. Philips, the misunderstood villain who wants to rule the world.
Tam, tell us about Mr. Phillips?
Mr. Philips is the archetypal Bond villain, ice cool, ruthless, the personification of evil incarnate. His relentless ambition knows no bounds. For him, truly “The world is not enough”. He wants what’s in heaven and (more particularly) in hell to be under his control as well.
What do you think makes Night is Day unique?
What makes “Night Is Day” unique is a combination of factors. The script combines so many intriguing elements, drama, a love story, pathos, humour as well as the classic story of “good versus evil”, a tale of one man against overwhelming strength, pitted against seemingly hopeless odds. But our hero Jason overcomes it all through iron will, strength of character and his refusal to admit defeat. And of course, it’s set in Glasgow. Nothing like this has ever been attempted here before, so it is truly unique.
So far what’s been your favourite experience while making the show?
My favourite experience making the show was the big stand-off scene at the end of Series 1. Facing off to the inimitable Jason MacKenzie was a great experience.
So far what’s been your favourite experience while making the show?
Mr. Philips is different because he is a complex character, a man of contradictions. He believes he can take on the whole world, the combined forces of law and order, our whole society and bring it to heel. Was there ever a villain so evil?
Do you prefer playing the good guy or the bad guy?
I love playing the good guy and the bad guy, but playing the baddie is more fun. I get to be Goldfinger, Dr. No, Hugo Drax, Ernst Stavros Blofeld and Scaramanga (The Man With the Golden Gun) all in one day! I love it!
If you had a superpower, what would it be, and why?
The ability to fly. Then I could shoot off to the South of France without having to wait in a horrendous queue at Glasgow Airport!
